Climber Who Skied Everest Aims for Nanga Parbat
Polish ski mountaineer Andrzej Bargiel, 38, is hoping to ski down Nanga Parbat in Pakistan, one of the world’s 14 8,000-metre peaks at 8,126 metres. The Nanga Parbat attempt will include veteran climber Janusz Gołąb and mountaineer and filmmaker Dariusz Zaluski.
In 2015, Bargiel skied down Broad Peak (8,051 m) without bottled oxygen. In 2018, he completed the first full ski descent of K2 (8,611 m), documented in The Impossible Descent. By 2023, he skied all Karakoram 8,000-metre peaks, including Gasherbrum I and II. In 2025, he skied down Everest – read about it here. He’s the only person to ski both Everest and K2. National Geographic named him 2019 Adventurer of the Year.
“Nanga Parbat is a mountain that demands enormous patience and humility,” Bargiel said. “I’d like to try to find a logical, continuous descent line and ski it in the cleanest way possible.”
The exact route that Bargiel selects to attempt will depend on mountain conditions and the forecast. The team might have a small weather window to complete the historic objective.
