16-Year-Old is Youngest to Climb World’s Eighth Highest Mountain

Nima Chhiring Sherpa has become the youngest person ever to climb Manaslu (8,163 m), the world’s eighth highest mountain, at the age of 16 years, four months, and 18 days.

This was the grade 11 student’s first 8,000-metre expedition, and prior to Manaslu he had trekked to Everest base camp seven times, working as an assistant. Nima Chhiring, who’s from Phungling-6 in Taplejung, achieved the feat with Elite Exped. According to Mingma David Sherpa, co-founder of Elite Exped, Nima Chhiring stood on the summit at 6:24 a.m. on Sept. 28. “This achievement shows not just his courage but also the future potential of young Sherpa climbers,” said Mingma David.

The previous youngest climber up Manaslu was Nima Rinji Sherpa (16 years, 5 months, 12 days) back in 2022. Chhiring Sherpa was among several climbers who summited, including Naoko Watanabe, Tenjing Sherpa aka Lama, Ahmad M. Saleh, Manish Maharjan, Pemba Thinduk Sherpa, Nurbu Sherpa, and Lakpa Sherpa.

Last week, Carlos Soria became the oldest climber to summit Manaslu at 86 years old – read more about it here. Manaslu is busy this fall season, as there are more than 350 foreign climbers who got permits to attempt to summit.
