Watch Climber Free-Solo 5.12d Sport Route
Experienced climber Artem Chikin is featured in a new short film free-soloing a 5.12d called Шамбала (Shambala) in the Krasnodar region of Russia.
Free-soloing is an extreme form of rock climbing that should be left to climbers with years of outdoor climbing experience. Earlier this month, famed alpinist Pete Takeda talks about the rise of free-solo deaths, and the difference between free-soloing and scrambling, in a new video for the American Alpine Club – that video is also below.
In 2020, U.K. boulderer and climbing coach Pete Edwards wrote about the fine line between free-soloing and highball bouldering for Gripped magazine, saying, “My own personal definition for a boulder problem is the willingness of the climber to fall relatively unscathed from the last hard move.” Read his story here.
What makes watching free-soloing so compelling is that, although you may never attempt it yourself, it’s inspiring to witness climbers remain calm, cool and in control. Check out more of Chikin’s climbing on his Instagram below.
