Denali Mountaineering Ranger Dies in Crevasse Fall

A National Park Service mountaineering ranger died Thursday after falling into a crevasse near the 14,000-foot camp on Denali, according to the agency. The incident occurred at approximately 2 p.m. on June 12. The ranger was identified as Robin Pendery of Enumclaw, Washington, a seasonal mountaineering ranger assigned to Denali National Park and Preserve.

According to the National Park Service, personnel responded immediately after the fall and initiated rescue efforts. Pendery did not survive. Pendery joined Denali’s mountaineering staff in 2024, where duties included supporting climber safety, emergency response and mountaineering operations on North America’s highest peak, the agency said. The National Park Service said the incident remains under investigation and that additional details were not available.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of a member of our Denali family,” Denali National Park and Preserve Superintendent Brooke Merrell said in a statement released by the National Park Service. “Our mountaineering rangers dedicate themselves to serving visitors and helping others in one of the most challenging environments in the world. Today, we mourn the loss of a valued colleague, friend and teammate. Our thoughts are with Robin’s family and loved ones.”

The National Park Service said it is focused on supporting Pendery’s family, friends and colleagues and will release additional information when it becomes available. Our deepest condolences to Pendery’s family and friends.
