Squamish’s Stawamus Chief backside trail reopens following rock slide

The Stawamus Chief backside trail has been reopened after a rock slide event in December shut it down. 

BC Parks announced on March 27 that scaling and reclamation of the trail was completed. 

The trail was previously shut down after two rock slides happened in December. The first occurred on Dec. 20 and the second occurred on Dec. 26. 

Crews began rock scaling in the area on Feb. 27.

The backside trail is probably the most popular hiking route in Squamish, but it also serves as the standard descent for many of the routes going up the Stawamus Chief, especially very popular moderates like the Buttress, Butt Light and Angel’s Crest, among others. 

An alternative way out exists, but it’s much longer hike out via Slhanay onto the Mamquam Forest Service Road. 

The reopening of the backside trail comes just in time for the rock season in Squamish.
