Explore Fraser Valley bouldering with Squatch On The Rocks
Looking for a British Columbia bouldering road trip idea this summer?
If you’ve already done Squamish, the Fraser Valley might be worth a shot. And it’ll be easier than ever to get acquainted with, thanks to an upcoming event.
The Fraser Valley Climbing Society is kicking off its inaugural Squatch On The Rocks on June 13.
The gathering will showcase some of the underrated climbing in The Stacks.
A densely packed boulder field is hidden in the forest, ranging from featureless slabs of granite to highly featured overhangs, said Khrisna Nacua, a co-organizer with the event.
“It is mostly granite, with Hope Slide being paleozoic greenstone (metavolcanic basalt), and the Canyon being a mix of granite and granodiorite,” he said.
“A good variety from the calm and clean landings in the rain forest at the Stacks, the Grid, and Hunter Creek – to the talus of Elbow Lake – to the sandy beaches and fast drying boulders of the Fraser Canyon.”
It’s also a good place to beat the crowds, as the area doesn’t attract nearly as many people as a place like Squamish, he said.
At 10 a.m. a free bouldering social will help introduce participants to The Stacks, and all skill levels are welcome. Crashpads will be provided if you don’t have gear. A small flash competition will be held.
There will also be a tour of some of Marc-Andre Leclerc’s favourite boulders in the area, as he’d been known to do circuits there.
This will later be followed by a social gathering at Mountain View Brewery at 4 p.m. and then a paid screening event of the Mellow Film Tour at 6 p.m. Proceeds will go towards the Fraser Valley Climbing Society, which advocates for climbing in the area.
