North Americans Killed in Nepal Avalanche
An avalanche swept through a camp in Nepal on Monday, claiming the lives of seven people. According to official statements, five of the deceased were foreign climbers and two were Nepali guides. The incident occurred at an altitude of roughly 4,900 metres, in a remote section of the Himalayan peak, where rescue teams reached the site on foot.
The Kathmandu Post reported here that three U.S. citizens and one Canadian are among the dead. It also stated that an Italian, and two Nepali nationals also died. Four others were injured and four people were missing. Rescue efforts are ongoing.
Deputy superintendent of police Gyan Kumar Mahato of in Dolakha, said a team of 15 comprising of foreign climbers and Nepali guide were attempting Yalung Ri when they got caught up in the avalanche around 9 a.m. local time. The Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force are among the agencies involved in search and rescue operations but bad weather is hampering efforts.
