Updated: Crews have removed a Volkswagen Beetle hanging from a Squamish rock face

Crews airlifted the Volkswagen off the Papoose this morning, and it has been crushed for recycling.

Contractors for BC Parks have removed a Volkswagen Beetle that has been hanging from the Papoose in Squamish for over a week.

B.C.’s Ministry of Environment and Parks confirmed to Gripped that the vehicle was removed this afternoon.

It’s currently sitting on top of the Papoose and is scheduled to be lowered down via helicopter tomorrow shortly after 7 a.m.

On March 30, the car was hung from the popular mini-monolith, which is home to a variety of smaller multi-pitch climbs.

A local route developer inspected the anchor system shortly after, and it was deemed unsafe.

As a result, BC Parks closed the area down and put out a call for contractors to remove the car. Crux Trades was enlisted for the job.

It’s unclear who hung the Bug on the rock.

However, the choice of car, colour, and the giant ‘E’ follows the same pattern of University of British Columbia engineering student pranks.

Previously, UBC engineers have hung the same car and colour from other landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge.
