The Red River Gorge

The Red River Gorge in Kentucky is a world-class climbing destination. If you’ve already been, you are well aware of the sheer volume of five-star climbs. If you have not yet made the trip out, the sandstone sport and trad climbing paradise really should be the next destination on your list.

At the Red, there are over 4,000 routes on impeccable rock full of many interesting features, including pockets, huecos, slopers, crimps, flutes, and chickenheads. Train your endurance before you arrive, or let the Red whip you into shape with its long, often overhanging resistance-style climbing. The Red has everything from 5.4 to 5.14d and a wide spread of grades at most crags, making it a perfect destination for partners or groups with mixed abilities.

The Silos

Many people camp when at the Red, but if you are looking for a climbing trip that feels a little more like a holiday, The Silos are an exciting new choice in the area. The Silos are one-of-a-kind cabins in the Daniel Boone National Forest. They are located in an excellent spot for exploring the Red’s many sectors, as most major climbing areas are 15–20 minutes away by car, including popular zones like the Muir Valley and Pendergrass-Murray Recreational Preserve (PMRP).

The cabins at The Silos are truly unique structures. Built from retired grain silos, the cabins feature very high ceilings and interesting circular spaces. There are six cabins in total on the property, each with its own name and set of features – The Still, The Boone, The Yoder, The Holler, The Derby, and The Rock Haus. Cabin occupancy ranges from two to eight guests. You can see the details about all six here.
